PREVENTION IS THE BEST MEDICINE

1. SPAY/NEUTER: Make sure all your pets have been spayed or neutered. They will be much less likely to wander since they won't be looking for a mate. If you can't afford to have your pet spayed/neutered, please contact the Humanitarians of Florida.

2. IDENTIFICATION: Make sure your pet wears proper identification at all times, even indoor cats, so they can be easily returned should something happen. Break away collars are suggested for cats. Also be sure you have a current photo of your pet. Pictures are worth a thousand words.

3. LEASHES/HARNESSES: Unless your pet is in a safe enclosure, always use a leash when outside. Don't run the risk of their running off. Cats and dogs can be trained to walk on a leash if you're patient and consistent. In addition to collars with proper identification, harnesses are suggested. Harnesses give you better control while making your pet feel more secure.

4.  DISASTER PLANNING STARTS NOW: DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT THEM! For vital information on how to protect your companion animal during a natural disaster, and for a Survival Shopping List  visit SPCABe sure to check out our local Citrus County Animal Control site for evacuation information. procedures and tips.

Prevention also includes heartworm prevention. Heartworms kill.
Don't let mosquitos cause your pet to struggle for breath
before claiming his or her life.
